More Useful Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows Computers

While most of us are already aware of obvious keyboard shortcuts like “Alt+F4” and “Ctrl+C”, there are some obscure shortcuts which most of us tend to overlook. These keyboard shortcuts are not only useful for the average PC user but for advanced users as well. This article contains many such amazing keyboard shortcuts which if used properly could save a lot of time and effort. So let's get started.

Windows key+D: This shortcut is the keyboard equivalent of “Show the Desktop”. It is useful for quickly minimizing every open window when someone walks in and you are doing some private work.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc: This shortcut directly starts the task manager. While Alt+Ctrl+Del used to bring up the Task Manager in Windows XP and earlier versions, in Windows 8 and Windows 7, it just brings up the lock this computer screen.

Ctrl+Click: This shortcut is useful for opening a link in a background tab. This is useful when you have to load a page without leaving the current one.

Alt+Print Screen: takes the screenshot of the current active window as opposed to just Print Screen which takes the screenshot of the entire screen.

Shift+Click for Yes to All and No to All: If you have a lot of dialog boxes asking yes and no question, just shift+click Yes or No on one to yes all or no all.

Ctrl+C on an error dialog box to copy its contents: Suppose your computer is giving an error message and you want to copy its contents to send to the support guy, what do you do? Just press Ctrl+C while the dialog box is highlighted and its contents will be copied to your clipboard.

Ctrl+T: This keyboard shortcut opens a new tab in internet browsers.

Ctrl+Shift+T: Reopens the last closed tab.

Ctrl+Shift+N: This shortcut opens a new incognito window in Google Chrome.

Ctrl+Shift+P: Opens a new private window in Mozilla Firefox.

Alt+Enter after writing the domain name in the address bar of your browser to insert .com automatically.

Shift+Enter inserts .net domain name extension.

Ctrl+W: This shortcut closes the current tab in your browser quickly.

Ctrl+Backspace: This shortcut deletes the last word you have typed. It is useful in case you typed in a wrong word and want to delete it quickly.

Ctrl+Left or Right Arrow key: This shortcut allows you to move the cursor one word at a time instead of the default one character at a time.

Ctrl++: This shortcut allows you to zoom in web pages in web browsers. Useful when text on a web page is too small to read properly. Ctrl+Scroll wheel can also zoom in documents, file thumbnails and icons in Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Ctrl+-: This shortcut does the reverse of the previous shortcut.

Ctrl+0: Reset the webpage's zoom.

Windows key+M: Minimizes all the open windows.

Ctrl+L: This shortcut allows you to quickly jump to the address bar of your web browser.

Windows key+Pause/Break: Quickly open the system properties dialog box.

Ctrl+Shift+Delete: This shortcut opens the option to delete your browser's history, cookies, cache and other details that it stores while you browse the internet. This shortcut is extremely useful for the privacy conscious.

Windows Key+L: This shortcut locks your computer.

Alt+Select: This shortcut allows you to select rectangular blocks of text in Word processors, something that is not possible with simple select.

F2: Allows you to rename the selected file.

Holding Shift while inserting a device with removable storage prevents automatic run.

Ctrl+F: This keyboard shortcut opens the Find option in any program.

Ctrl+S: If you are working on a software and want to quickly save your progress, this shortcut will come in handy.

Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End: Useful for quickly going to the top and bottom of a page.

Ctrl+P: Useful for printing the current page.

Space Bar: While viewing a web page in a browser, pressing space bar moves the page down.

Alt+Tab: Useful for quickly cycling between running applications. Press along with Shift to cycle backwards.

Ctrl+Tab: Cycle between tabs in your browser.

Ctrl+F5: Clears the cache and refreshes the current tab.

Shift+Right click: Open alternate right click options.

Alt+Double click: Open the file's properties. Alt+Enter can also be used for this.

These are some keyboard shortcuts that I found extremely useful. If you know some more useful keyboard shortcuts, do mention them in the comments.

Android Jelly Bean vs Apple IOS 7 vs Window Phone 8

Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2

Jelly Bean 4.2.2 is the latest offering from the android for their portable devices. Although there is nothing revolutionary about this update, but there are enough significant updates to cement Jelly Bean as the top mobile OS. The UI has significant improvements, can easily resize and move icons and widgets around on each home screen panel, or delete apps by swiping the icon up, which causes it to disappear. The system font looked sharp and smooth ever than before. The predictive keywords work amazingly well but only when you use completely English as the mode for chatting or texting. The predictive text engine of Jelly Bean is superior to the predictive text engine of Apple, because Jelly Bean provides plenty of alternatives too. The browsing experience was smooth and seamless, except for the fact that when auto rotation was switched off then some pages developed snag because they were not able to reorient themselves. This is a minor issue that can be sorted out. There is no Adobe, as Adobe has discontinued all mobile flash development. One of the flagship new features is photo sphere, which lets you take panoramic-like photos in a series of steps as you spin around in place. One important upgrade is Miracast support. Miracast is a wireless display technology that lets you project the contents of the phone’s screen onto an HDTV with a Miracast-compatible wireless adapter attached. Also a “Daydream” feature displays Google current news, scrolling widget information, or some of your photos whenever the device is idle or placed in the desktop dock. Unfortunately, you can’t combine these features.  The best application of this new update is offline voice dictation. It lets you compose messages by speaking to the device even when it is not connected to the internet- just talk and the words will appear on the screen. Believe me, this works amazingly well and never missed a word. It’s for English only as of now. With revised Bluetooth and quick Wi-Fi settings along with other minor but significant changes makes this OS the best available in the market.

Apple iOS 7

We are talking about Apple and when they do something as big as completely overhauling there OS for their portable devices, it’s going to be loved and hated in every nooks and corner of the technological world. Even ardent Apple fans felt that the look and feel of this new OS was jaded. The biggest change is that visually it’s all new, nothing has been left unchanged. iOS is the last major platform to abandon skeuomorphism and go for a flat look. One of the major changes in UI is that the back gesture is available in all iOS 7 default apps. One of the major changes in UI is that the back gesture is available in all iOS 7 default apps. Apple has introduced a Control Center much like android, windows, or blackberry. So, we can say that the idea is borrowed, but for good only. The new safari browser is better and faster. Beside these features, Apple has some new features, best among them is called iTunes Radio, which is free radio streaming service that you can customize with the artist preference. Overall, iOS 7 seems to be a mix of catch-up, curation and very less disruption.

Windows Phone 8

Laying low but still doing a brisk business, the Windows Phone 8 has taken everyone by surprise. When the world was giving credit to either iOS or android, window silently gambled by announcing Windows Phone 8. One of the biggest advantages of this OS is that it’s not the update of its previous issues but it is completely new OS. The duality between the new style interface and apps and the desktop environment is just to be found in the fresh OS. Windows Phone 8 brings more than just an interface and app-running capability. It’s also a set of services, courtesy of the new Microsoft account and SkyDrive. Live tiles are refreshing, as they give you any update on your device. Another advantage of Windows Phone 8’s touch implementation for tablets is that you can do nearly everything with your thumb; this makes sense given the way you hold your tablet. Windows finally introduced an app store called windows store much like android play store. One advantage of windows store over Apples store is that it allows trial version, so you can sample before you buy. Windows Phone 8 is probably the most beta tested OS ever released, and it feels sturdy in day to day use.
