7 things you didn't know about Google's self-driving car

Google caused a flurry of excitement by unveiling an all-new self-driving car that takes its array of add-on sensors and integrates them into a vehicle that looks like a cross between a Smart car and a Cozy Coupe.

Currently being tested around the company's Californian headquarters, the prototype could offer a whole new paradigm for driving where vehicles are operated by a single push-button and function like an automatic taxi service — not autonomous cars.

There's still a whole load of questions (both legislative and technological) that need to be answered before these sorts of vehicles become anywhere near the norm, but announcements like this mean we're learning more about what a self-driving car might mean. Here's the favourite things we've learned today:

1. It can't avoid killing small animals

The sensors that allow the car to avoid pedestrians and cyclist aren't sensitive enough to avoid smaller beasties. It's unclear exactly what the size threshold is (will a small dog be seen? A badger?) but Wired reports that squirrels are definitely "too small" and could get "creamed". There have been no accidents to date though — and Google and working on making the sensors more accurate.

2. It's got a face for a reason

Google says they're trying to make the car look as friendly as possible and to that end built a 'face' into the front of the car. Humans seeing faces in random objects is well-documented (it's often referred to as facial pareidolia and is all thanks to evolution) but the choice underscores the fact that Google faces a struggle against those who are inherently hostile to technology. The promo video for the car underscores exactly the same message: everyone's happy, everyone's safe (except the squirrels).

3. No signal on your mobile? No Google-car for you

Of course the problem with connected cars is less-than-connected roads. Ever got spotty signal on your phone on the motorway? Then that's where your self-driving car might lose access to the detailed maps (created in advance the old fashioned way by Google's hand-driven cars) that it uses for guidance. There's no reason information like this can't come preloaded into self-driving cars, but it would give new meaning to the phrase 'going off the edge of the map'.

4. It feels 'like a theme park ride'

Although Google has released a video showing 'normal folks' having a go in the car (above) not many journalists have been given the same opportunity. Kara Swisher and Liz Gannes of tech site Recode were two of the lucky few and they described the car as "a gondola with wheels", noting that the combination of button-operated controls and a little departure message telling them to pick-up their baggage when they left made it feel "a lot like a theme park ride."

5. We're getting them in Milton Keynes

See that below? No, it's not a rival prototype from Microsoft but actually one of 20 pods that will be introduced to Milton Keynes in 2015 as part of their trial for a 'driverless public transport system'. Like Google's vehicles they'll eventually have no steering wheel and be operating at the touch of a button, using a combination of GPS, sensors and cameras to navigate and avoid pedestrians. Poor Milton Keynes - forefront of the self-driving revolution and nobody knows.

6. Google's cars will still need a steering wheel - for legal reasons

Despite the fact that the car is being advertised as having no controls, Google will have to include both pedals and a wheel when they test the vehicles on California's streets thanks to the state's laws. This tension between what a car is and what it isn't (see above - do you need a steering wheel? Do you need wheels?) is sure to continue to plague Google .

7. Google will pay the parking tickets

So far Google's self-driving cars have never gotten a parking ticket (and they've only been in two accidents — both when humans had taken control) but if they do, it's apparently Google that will pay up. A safety director for the company told The Atlantic that because "the decisions are not being made by the individual" they think that "the ticket should go to the company". It's a generous answer, but one that raise more serious questions about responsibility and the law: what happens if someone does get hurt by a Google car, who's responsible then?

Microsoft Launches Surface Pro 3 Tablet that can Replace Laptop

NEW DELHI: Microsoft on Tuesday launched Surface Pro 3 at an event in New York. The company said that the device, which succeeds Surface Pro 2, combines the best of a tablet and laptop in a single gadget.

"So many people carry both a laptop and a tablet but really want just one device that serves all purposes," said Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Surface. "Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop — packing all the performance of a fully powered laptop into a thin, light and beautifully designed device."

Powered by an Intel Core i processor, Surface Pro 3 will be available in several configurations. The basic model, which has a Core i3 processor and 64GB internal storage, will cost $799. Despite packing in a Core i processor, the tablet runs cool. Microsoft claims it is the slimmest (9.1mm) device with a Core i processor.

"The product we're announcing today has been three years in the making. To get this thin, light, and powerful was a huge challenge - partly because the powerful processors that power Surface Pro 3 need to be cooled... we invented a new fan technology that is 30% more efficient than previous solutions. The new, thinner fan cools a series of fins placed around it instead of forcing the exhaust air out through a channel. Not having to create space for this channel allows Surface Pro 3 to be thinner without sacrificing performance," said Panay.

Surface Pro 3 will be available in the US and Canada from June 20. The availability will be extended to 26 additional countries by end of August but India is not one of them.

Microsoft has not yet launched a Surface tablet in India. It is likely that Surface Pro 3 may not come to Indian market any time soon. Amrish Goyal, the head of Windows division at Microsoft India, had earlier told TOI that the company believed the Surface tablets were too expensive for Indian market. He revealed that instead of Surface tablets, in India Microsoft was focusing on less expensive tablets created by Microsoft's hardware partners like Lenovo and Dell.

Surface Pro 3 has a 12-inch screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels. It features an adjustable kickstand, has a casing made of magnesium and weighs around 800 grams. It has two cameras - 5MP each - in the front and rear. The device uses Windows 8.1 Pro.

The tablet will also be available with a Core i3 or a Core i7 processor. The device has 4GB RAM in standard configuration but consumers will have the option to go for 8GB RAM. Similarly, if consumers want, they would be able to opt for the model with 512GB internal storage. The fully upgraded model of Surface Pro 3 will cost around $1,949.

Like earlier Surface tablets, the Surface Pro 3 will also be compatible with a few accessories. "New Surface accessories like the improved Surface Pro Type Cover will take Surface Pro 3 from tablet to laptop in a snap. The new premium Surface Pen with pressure sensitivity enables a more natural writing experience, while a full-size USB 3.0 port, microSD card reader and Mini DisplayPort allow for quick file transfers and easy connections to a range of peripherals," said Microsoft. The accessories will cost extra.

Apple, Google Settle Smartphone Patent Litigation

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc and Google Inc's Motorola Mobility unit have agreed to settle all patent litigation between them over smartphones, ending one of the highest-profile lawsuits in technology.

In a joint statement on Friday, the companies said the settlement does not include a cross license to their respective patents.

"Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform," the statement said.

Apple and companies that make phones using Google's Android software have filed dozens of such lawsuits against one another around the world to protect their technology. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs called Android a "stolen product".

Google and Apple informed a federal appeals court in Washington that their cases against each other should be dismissed, according to filings on Friday. However, the deal does not apply to Apple's litigation against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Apple has battled Google and what once were the largest adopters of its Android mobile software, partly to try to curb the rapid expansion of the free, rival operating system.

But it has been unable to slow Android's ascendancy, which is now installed on an estimated 80 per cent of new phones sold every year. Motorola, the US company that pioneered the mobile phone, no longer ranks among the biggest smartphone makers.

Both Motorola and HTC Corp have been eclipsed by Chinese Android adopters such as Lenovo Group Ltd — which is buying Motorola — and Huawei and Xiaomi.

The most high-profile case between Apple and Motorola began in 2010. Motorola accused Apple of infringing several patents, including one essential to how cellphones operate on a 3G network, while Apple said Motorola violated its patents to certain smartphone features.

The cases were consolidated in a Chicago federal court. However, Judge Richard Posner dismissed it in 2012 shortly before trial, saying neither company had sufficient evidence to prove its case. Last month, the appeals court gave the iPhone manufacturer another chance to win a sales ban against Motorola.

Apple's biggest victory against Android came against Samsung, where US juries have awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages. Those verdicts are on appeal, and despite years of court challenges to Android, Apple has not been able to win a crippling sales injunction.

Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 for $12.5 billion, and this year announced it was selling Motorola Mobility's handset business to Lenovo, while keeping the vast majority of the patents.

The case at the US court of appeals for the Federal Circuit is Apple Inc vs Motorola Mobility, case number 2012-1528, -1549.

Samsung to launch Google Glass-like device

Samsung may release its own Google Glass-like device called Gear Glass as early as September, according to a new report from Korea.

It sounds like Gear Glass will be nearly identical in form to Google Glass, if a new report from Business Korea first spotted by Sam Mobile turns out to be true.

There will be a small prism slightly above one eye for viewing content and an earpiece for listening.

Gear Glass is likely to run on the Tizen operating system, an open-source software that Samsung has played a large role in developing. Most wearable displays on the market, including Google Glass and Epson's Moverio BT-200s, run on Android.

A Samsung associate reportedly said the following to Business Korea:

"We rolled out the smartwatch first, and have secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents. Following the roll out of our smart watch Galaxy Gear in September last year, we are slated to introduce our smart glass Gear Glass this September."

The new report echoes previous rumours that have been circulating for months. In October, Russian tech blogger Eldar Murtazin tweeted that Samsung would release its own Google Glass competitor called Gear Glass that could launch this year in April or May.

But now it looks like Samsung will wait to introduce Gear Glass at IFA, the big tech conference in Berlin that starts September 5.

Samsung has also filed patents for wearable display technology in both Korea and the United States.

Since Google unveiled Glass in 2012, several competitors have announced wearable displays of their own. A few of these companies, such as Vuzix, have been making wearable displays long before Glass had been revealed, but the genre in general has yet to gain traction in the mainstream consumer market.

Google Glass is still in its early stages. This week, Google started selling it to the public, but it still costs $1,500. It will likely be a few more years before Google is ready to launch a consumer version of Glass.

Oracle wins copyright ruling against Google over Android

SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON: Oracle won a legal victory against Google on Friday as a US appeals court decided Oracle could copyright parts of the Java programming language, which Google used to design its Android smartphone operating system.

The case, decided by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, is being closely watched in Silicon Valley. A high-profile 2012 trial featured testimony from Oracle's chief executive, Larry Ellison, and Google CEO Larry Page, and the legal issues go to the heart of how tech companies protect their most valuable intellectual property.

Google's Android operating system is the world's best-selling smartphone platform. Oracle sued Google in 2010, claiming that Google had improperly incorporated parts of Java into Android. Oracle is seeking roughly $1 billion on its copyright claims.

A San Francisco federal judge had decided that Oracle could not claim copyright protection on parts of Java, but on Friday the three-judge Federal Circuit panel reversed that ruling.

"We conclude that a set of commands to instruct a computer to carry out desired operations may contain expression that is eligible for copyright protection," Federal Circuit Judge Kathleen O'Malley wrote.

Pamela Samuelson, a professor at University of California, Berkeley, School of Law who wrote a brief supporting Google in the case, said the Federal Circuit's decision means software companies now face uncertainty in determining how to write interoperable computer programs that do not violate copyright.

"What we have is a decision that will definitely shake up the software industry," said Samuelson.

But Oracle attorney E. Joshua Rosenkranz said the law has always been clear on these issues. "There's nothing at all astounding in what the Federal Circuit did," he said.

Not the end of legal dispute
The case examined whether computer language that connects programs - known as application programming interfaces, or APIs - can be copyrighted. At trial in San Francisco, Oracle said Google's Android trampled on its rights to the structure of 37 Java APIs.

US District Judge William Alsup ruled that the Java APIs replicated by Google were not subject to copyright protection and were free for all to use. The Federal Circuit disagreed on Friday, ruled for Oracle and instructed the lower court to reinstate a jury's finding of infringement as to 37 Java API packages.

"We find that the district court failed to distinguish between the threshold question of what is copyrightable — which presents a low bar — and the scope of conduct that constitutes infringing activity," O'Malley wrote.

The unanimous Federal Circuit panel ordered further proceedings before Alsup to decide whether Google's actions were protected under fair use.

Programmers could still craft interoperable programs if the opinion stands, but lawyers will have to be more involved in signing off on what is permissible, said Eric Goldman, a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law.

"That's really expensive and lawyers are not going to give yes or no answers, and that's going to be stressful for everybody," Goldman said.

Google had argued that software should only be allowed to be patented, not copyrighted. However, O'Malley wrote that the Federal Circuit is bound to respect copyright protection for software, "until either the Supreme Court or Congress tells us otherwise."

Oracle General Counsel Dorian Daley called the decision a "win" for an industry "that relies on copyright protection to fuel innovation." Google said it set a "damaging precedent for computer science and software development" and was considering its options.

The case in the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is Oracle America vs Google, 13-1021.

How to Backup iTunes Podcasts

Where does iTunes store its podcast files on the computer? I would like to manually back up my collection to an external drive.

Start with the Music or My Music library on the PC or Mac. Inside your Music library, you should see an iTunes folder and inside that, there should be an iTunes Media folder — unless it has been purposely moved. Podcastsare kept in the iTunes Media folder by default. (If you have been using iTunes for years or haven't upgraded to iTunes 9 or a later version, the folder may be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media.)

Regardless of the folder's name, you should see a subfolder inside it named Podcasts. Inside the Podcasts folder are folders labeled with the names of all the audio and video podcasts you have downloaded or subscribed to through iTunes; individual episodes for each podcast are stored within each show's folder.

If you want to manually back up all your shows, one option is to drag a copy of the Podcasts folder from the computer to a connected external drive. However, a dedicated backup program and an external drive can automatically keep your podcast archive backed up on a regular schedule — along with all your other personal files on the computer.

Both the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems come with basic backup software, so you just need to supply a compatible external drive.
